Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures’ July 4th event movie “Minions: The Rise of Gru” pulled in an excellent $10.8 million in previews on Thursday.

The family animated feature will be playing in approximately 4,400 theaters in the U.S and Canada over the July 4th holiday weekend and is seen as a test of the strength of the family box office just weeks after “Lightyear” fizzled out.

Tracking suggests the movie will open to $70-80 million for the four-day holiday, but those preview numbers suggest it will come in higher.

A sequel to 2015’s “Minions,” the film is the fifth entry in the “Despicable Me” franchise which is the top-grossing animated series in history.
